D-Day: The Normandy Landings

On 6 June, over 156,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy in the largest amphibious invasion in history. Despite heavy casualties, especially at Omaha Beach, the operation established a crucial foothold in Nazi-occupied France.

Liberation of Paris

On 25 August, French and American forces liberated Paris after four years of German occupation. General de Gaulle marched down the Champs-Élysées as crowds of Parisians celebrated in the streets.

Battle of the Bulge

In December, Germany launched a massive surprise offensive through the Ardennes forest in Belgium. It was Hitler's last major gamble on the Western Front and ultimately failed, though it caused over 80,000 Allied casualties.

V-1 and V-2 Attacks on London

From June, Germany launched V-1 flying bombs and later V-2 rockets at London and southeast England. Over 9,000 V-weapons hit Britain, killing nearly 9,000 civilians and causing widespread destruction.

Attempted Assassination of Hitler

On 20 July, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg placed a bomb in Hitler's military headquarters in East Prussia. Hitler survived the blast, and the conspirators were swiftly arrested and executed.

Bretton Woods Conference

In July, delegates from 44 Allied nations met in New Hampshire to plan the post-war international monetary system. The conference established the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

The V-1 flying bomb and V-2 rocket were deployed by Germany, becoming the first cruise missile and ballistic missile used in warfare. Streptomycin was isolated as the first antibiotic effective against tuberculosis.

The Zeitgeist of 1944
