World Events in 1948
National Health Service Founded
On 5 July, the NHS was launched in Britain under Health Minister Aneurin Bevan, providing free healthcare to all citizens. On its first day, 475 million prescriptions were issued as people rushed to access treatment they had previously been unable to afford.
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
In June, the Soviet Union blocked all road and rail access to West Berlin. The Western Allies responded with a massive airlift, flying in food, fuel, and supplies for nearly a year in one of the first major crises of the Cold War.
State of Israel Declared
On 14 May, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. The declaration triggered immediate invasion by neighbouring Arab states, beginning the first Arab-Israeli War.
1948 London Olympics
London hosted the first Olympic Games since 1936, known as the 'Austerity Olympics'. Athletes were housed in military camps and existing buildings, and no new venues were constructed. Germany and Japan were not invited.
Truman Wins US Presidential Election
In one of the greatest upsets in American political history, Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey despite every major poll predicting a Dewey victory. The Chicago Tribune famously printed the headline 'Dewey Defeats Truman' prematurely.
Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi
On 30 January, Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse in New Delhi. The father of Indian independence was 78 years old, and his death sent shockwaves around the world.
