Fall of the Berlin Wall

On 9 November, the Berlin Wall was opened after 28 years. Thousands of East Germans poured through the checkpoints as jubilant crowds celebrated on both sides. It marked the symbolic end of the Cold War and the beginning of German reunification.

Tiananmen Square Massacre

On 4 June, the Chinese military violently suppressed pro-democracy protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Hundreds, possibly thousands, were killed. The image of 'Tank Man' standing before a column of tanks became one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century.

Hillsborough Disaster

On 15 April, 97 Liverpool football fans were killed in a crush at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium during an FA Cup semi-final. It was the worst disaster in British sporting history and led to decades of campaigning for justice.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

On 24 March, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska, spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil. The environmental damage was catastrophic and sparked a global conversation about fossil fuel transportation.

Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia

In November, peaceful protests led to the fall of the communist government in Czechoslovakia. Dissident playwright Václav Havel became president by December in a stunning peaceful transition.

Romanian Revolution

In December, Romania's communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was overthrown and executed after a brief and violent revolution — the only Eastern Bloc country where the transition from communism involved significant bloodshed.
